In Which I Do the Spring Cleaning Writer Tag Challenge

springcleaningwritertagchallenge

Last week I shared my very first original tag, the Spring Cleaning Writer Tag Challenge — and today I’m here to answer the questions myself, as promised!

So this is a chance to catch up on ALL my writerly news of late! 🙂

1. Dust-bunnies and Plot-bunnies: Reorganize Your Writing Goals (Or Make New Ones)

I didn’t so much have “goals” as “dreams” (like I mentioned in my New Year post), but a glance at those can show that I’m not very far on most of them. I did, however, start working on a few! So I’ll share those at least. Because #positivethinking.

  • Finish the short stories I’d started. I haven’t, actually, BUT I did write a new one, a flashfiction. Which I actually entered in a contest for the Fellowship of Fantasy — I think fan voting starts March 27 (tomorrow) so you can check it out if you like, and I’m so excited to see everyone’s entries! (And I had an idea for another short story. So many ideas. Halp.)
  • I haven’t set up my Facebook page yet (waiting on finishing my website first) BUT I did take the first step and set up a FB account. *cough* (What is this life.) So you can find me there if you’re so inclined. 🙂
  • I’ve been WORKING on my official website. It’s not done yet but I have clear ideas about where I want it to go and I’ve been working on it a bit… I will be sure to share it with y’all when it’s ready! (Going hand-in-hand with this is my newsletter, which, again, is not ready yet, but will be available to sign up for when my site is up, even if I might not start said newsletter for a little while.)

  • Spend more time with the stories and characters I love most. I’ve been doing a little of this, namely finishing a chapter with Tare & co. that I had been stuck on FOREVER, and which is full of so much tension but also fun and feels. ❤ And I plotted the first dozen chapters of The Other Half of Everything and have been thinking a lot about Teague and Meridian and the rest. I’m so excited to have wrestled part of this into an outline! 😀 Now that I actually know where the bits I’ve written out of order go, it’s rather exhilarating. (Writing a book out of order is exhausting and I don’t recommend it, but this book is something special, and it will be written how it pleases, thank-you-very-much, regardless of how I feel about it.)

  • I have NOT finished developing The Siren and the Skyship sequels, but I’ve been doing brainstorming on and off, making a little progress, and I might work on this project more for Camp? We’ll see?

  • I am actually working on my freelance proofreading/copyediting business, which I’m very excited about! I’ve done a couple projects now, and I love it. If anyone needs their typos caught, I’m available. 😉

  • And obviously Realm Makers hasn’t happened yet, but I have officially signed up for it. Guys. I’m going to Realm Makers in July! I’M SO EXCITED. I can’t wait to meet everyone there! 🙂

So my goals/dreams are still similar, and that’s just an update on the ones I’ve made progress on. 🙂 Those are mostly partial successes, and if I’m being honest, I really haven’t been able to focus much on writing this year yet — which makes me sad. But it’s heartening to see I’m making a little bit of progress in a few areas! ^_^

Tentative new goal might be to do Camp NaNoWriMo and focus on an hourly goal, working on plotting my Sky Voyages trilogy and hopefully finishing The Siren and the Skyship…

But I have no idea if I can pull that off, or even if it’s a good idea, because of how BUSY life is for me right now.

But I wanted to be more open about my goals, even the ones I’m scared won’t pull through, so. That’s a hope. I don’t know if I’ll do it or not.

(And yes, I know Camp is in less than a week and I haven’t decided. Shush. Let me live on the edge for a minute. XD)

2. Which Stage Are You At?

  • a. Remodeling layouts (planning the story)
  • b. Painting the walls in colorful hues (writing)
  • c. Polishing the windows and scrubbing the floors and putting flowers in vases (editing)
  • d. Blueprints (not to the cleaning or remodeling yet… just drawing up plans for the very beginning inklings of a story)
  • e. Some combination of those things (cleaning out a closet)

On which book? O_O I think I’m doing most of these for one story or another. XD (Trust me to make a tag I can’t answer very well. :P)

How about a run-down on my WIPs (works-in-progress)?

  • The Siren and the Skyship = Limbo, in preparation for getting back to planning the rest of the story/writing
  • Sky Voyages sequels (Siren and the Skyship, books 2 and 3) = Blueprints
  • The Other Half of Everything = Cleaning out a closet (because writing out of order/plotting is a confusing state of being and I don’t know what category it fits in)
  • The Secret of Kedran’s Wood (KW2) = Writing
  • Various short stories = Also writing (or rather, waiting to get back to writing)
  • We Otter Do It (flashfiction for the contest) = Re-reading it over and over because I for some reason think it’s hilarious/adorable and can’t stop. *hides*

3. Treasure From the Back of the Closet (Share one to three snippets you love!)

He had a little half smile that melted her heart, and music that made it whole again. Or perhaps it was the music that broke her heart, and his smile that healed it. More likely, it was both.

(untitled short story snippet)

“Come on, what’s your price?”

“My what?”

“Price.”

Tare gave him a stony look.

Harold glanced up at the darkening winter sky as if looking for patience. “Come on, don’t pretend. Everyone has one. Name your price, I’ll meet it, and we can be done here.”

Tare shook his head. “What you seem to be having a lack of understanding about,” Tare said, very evenly and coldly, “is that I’m not everyone.”

(The Secret of Kedran’s Wood)

The door creaked open. A tall, wobbling stack of parchment pattered into the room on little furry paws. At least, that’s what it looks like when your otter secretary comes into your office carrying the mail.

I’m a respectable young man and a magician, and nobody would believe me if I told them my life is tyrannized by an adorable otter.

(opening of my flashfiction for said contest)

3.5. Bonus: Do Some Actual Spring Cleaning of Your Writer Self! (And share a picture of your writing space/notebooks/computer!)

I did do a little Spring Cleaning to go with this, and took the opportunity to take a picture of my two usual writing nooks.

Here’s my comfy chair I sit in a lot (to read or write), and my bullet-journal open to my blog planner page, with my writing journal open to the next blank page (which I should go fill once I finish this; ‘scuse me), and of course my laptop, with 5 years of NaNo stickers.

And here’s my desk. (Yes, that’s my inner Tare showing in the form of the leather jacket on the back of my chair… *cough*) Note this post open on my laptop in a gloriously amusing way. Also note my Middle-earth map (yesterday was Middle-earth Day or Tolkien Reading Day, also known as the day the Ring was destroyed and the Gondorian New Year, so happy belated all-of-that to you!). And some of my writing books/reference books, my favorites being If You Want to Write, Pain Free at Your PC, Eats, Shoots & Leaves, and a large dictionary (because #helpful).

So there you are!

Original Tag: Writerly Spring Cleaning Challenge!

springcleaningwritertagchallenge

Happy Spring, my dearest Roadlings! ^_^ *frolics*

Since today is, in fact, the first day of Spring (for those of us in the northern hemisphere), and this is, in fact, a writing blog (little as you may notice with all the bookish things going on from time to time. ;))… I’ve decided to combine the two in a fun way!

Behold, my very first original tag!

I’ve created a tag challenge for writers, themed around Spring Cleaning, and I hope you’ll join me in trying it out!

It’s fairly short (only three and a half questions, though some are multiple choice or just jumping-off points, so it’s rather flexible actually) and I just know it’s going to be fun. 🙂

Spring is that special fresh-and-new time of year when everything gets brighter and warmer and greener and more alive—there’s a new LIFE to everything and a sort of brilliance to it. While that time may not be here yet in actual weather, depending on where you live, what better time than Spring to get re-excited about writing?

So I encourage you to get your mop and duster (er… pen and pencil) and dive right into the . . .

Rules:

1. Link back to the person who tagged you
2. Share the picture

THE QUESTIONS

1. Dust-bunnies and Plot-bunnies: Reorganize Your Writing Goals (Or Make New Ones)

Remember those writing goals/resolutions you made on January 1st or thereabouts and then stuffed under the bed to gather dust-bunnies and plot-bunnies? Well, it’s been nearly three months since then, and as that’s approximately a quarter of the year, it’s about time to pull those out and re-evaluate them (if the plot-bunnies have left enough to read after their chewing, or the dust-bunnies enough to make it legible after all this time of accumulating).

Which goals/resolutions have you accomplished? Which need to be re-focused on? Which are totally not happening and need scrapping? What new goals do you have? Give an update and get your goals cleaned out and reorganized!

Or, if you like, scrap them all and make some new goals to share—especially if the Deadly Bunny Duo of Dust and Plots and Doom have left no other options… which is okay! Spring is for new starts, anyway!

2. Which Stage Are You At?

Everyone’s writing (and spring-cleaning) processes are different, and at different stages. Pick the one that most applies to you and tell us where you are in your writing process!

  • a. Remodeling layouts (planning the story)
  • b. Painting the walls in colorful hues (writing)
  • c. Polishing the windows and scrubbing the floors and putting flowers in vases (editing)
  • d. Blueprints (not to the cleaning or remodeling yet… just drawing up plans for the very beginning inklings of a story)
  • e. Some combination of those things (cleaning out a closet)

Speaking of cleaning out closets…

3. Treasure From the Back of the Closet: Snippet Love

This one’s for the “Oh, I forgot about that!” feeling of delight when you find something delightful tucked away. Those bits of writing you’ve scribbled off so far this year and need to be dug out of a pile and aired in the sun…

Share one to three snippets you love!

3.5. Bonus: Do Some Actual Spring Cleaning of Your Writer Self!

  • Organize your notebooks and papers if you’re a physical type of writer
  • Sort your computer files and tidy them up if you’re a digital sort
  • Do some real-life cleaning up of your desk or writing space or room in general, if you exist in the physical world at all (which I rather hope you do)

Not required, but you get bonus points for any or all of these (in the form of… er… virtual cupcakes?), and I promise you’ll be a happier writer if you do some organizational writerly spring cleaning of your own! 🙂

You can even use the excuse to share a picture of your writing space or notebooks or computer—please do, because pictures make everything funner!

Here’s a copy-pastable list

1. Dust-bunnies and Plot-bunnies: Reorganize Your Writing Goals (Or Make New Ones)

2. Which Stage Are You At? Expound!

a. Remodeling layouts (planning the story)
b. Painting the walls in colorful hues (writing)
c. Polishing the windows and scrubbing the floors and putting flowers in vases (editing)
d. Blueprints (not to the cleaning or remodeling yet… just drawing up plans for the very beginning inklings of a story)
e. Some combination of those things (cleaning out a closet)

3. Treasure From the Back of the Closet (Share one to three snippets you love!)

3.5. Bonus: Do Some Actual Spring Cleaning of Your Writer Self! (and share a picture!)

Tagging

I tag/challenge YOU if you’re reading this and are a writer!

Do give it a try, and then link me to your post so I can read it! Or answer in the comments. 🙂

The “What If…?” Fantasy Tag! #FantasyMonth

I’ve been tagged for the “What If…?” Fantasy Tag by Jenelle Schmidt! Thanks, Jenelle! As #FantasyMonth draws to a close (aww! It’s been so funnn! *clings*) I thought it would be fun to round off the fantasy celebrations with this fun tag. 😀

Also, appropriately, I hear that today is “Tell a Fairytale Day.” Make of that what you will…

Rules

  • Thank the blogger who tagged you.
  • Include the graphic somewhere in your post.
  • Answer the questions.
  • Tag a few blogger friends – and let them know they’ve been tagged
  • Have fun!

The Questions

1. Your car breaks down in the middle of nowhere. The cast of the most recent fantasy book you read comes to your assistance… who are they? Will they be helpful?

I’ve got the cast from Rachel Starr Thomson’s book Lady Moon! And yes, they will be MOST helpful. >:D

(This is going to be fun.)

Celine will eye everything critically and give advice. Little Winnie the wombat will break off from eating a bush by the road, clamber into the glove compartment, pull out the manual, itch her ear, and say “Will this help?” and drop it at Celine’s feet. And Celine will smile, and perch on the trunk of the car with her dress blowing in the wind, and start to read the manual.

Shepherd boy Aldon will crawl underneath the car and start looking at the engine, even though he has no clue what he’s looking for — and his border collie Brig will helpfully lick his face. Grandfather Monk will totter around and offer everyone coffee (because it’s cold out here while we’re trying to fix it). The little pyroline fire-cat will rub against the tire and leave a smell of burning rubber…

Sir Brian will bellow something about exactly what we should do — and then kick the car with a clang of his suit of armor and leave a dent, in his attempt to get it working. This will jolt Aldon, who will shout his annoyance from under the car. Fiery washerwoman Tereska scolds Sir Brian and then grimly rolls up her sleeves to her bony elbows, and sets about tinkering in the engine from the top, getting greasy hands and rags involved.

And Tomas? Tomas will stand cheerfully by and watch with interest while everyone tries what they can. And then, when all efforts are exhausted, Celine will look at him and say “Tomas!” And Tomas will smile his sun-like smile, and he’ll fix the engine. We don’t know HOW, exactly; just that he does. It has something to do with the memory of the engine working before… It might not last for long, but it should long enough to get the car to the shop.

And if that doesn’t work — well, they’re all in the car with me now, so if it stops working again, they’ll be along to help. Tomas will pick up the car and carry it the rest of the way, defying all rules of gravity and reality to save the day, because that’s what tall and thin, dandelion-haired, smiling Immortals do. We’ll just have to make sure he doesn’t procrastinate his destiny to do so.

2. You go to bed one evening and wake up in the lair of the villain of the last fairy tale you read, where are you and how do you plan to get out?

Oh dear. I’m in the castle of the witch Watho in George MacDonald’s The Day Boy and the Night Girl. My best plan for escape is to wait until she’s distracted by Photogen and Nycteris, and slipping out a back door and swimming across the river…

3. You are transported into a fantasy realm and given a mythical creature as a companion and best friend… which mythical creature do you get?

I get a gryphon! He’s brown and black and gold, and he’s terrifying to some people, but he and I are the best of friends, and we can talk through our minds. He’s loyal, fierce and brave, and doesn’t mind when I ride his soft fur-and-feather back over the forests. He seems to have a grim personality, but has an unexpected edge of humor beneath.

4. In a strange series of coincidences, you end up needing to take the place of your favorite fantasy hero or heroine. Who are you?

I’m Wilhelmina from Lawhead’s Bright Empires series! I’m running the Kaffeehause in Prague, making delicious pastries, and helping save the universe(s). (And… oh dear, this is probably bad because I doubt I could stand up to events like she did! o.o )

5. To go along with question #4, now that you are that character, is there anything you would do differently than that character, now that you are running the show?

The problem is, I probably would, but I’d get it all wrong… Ahem. So I think I’d try very hard to be brave and do things like her. (Except I think I’d try not to break my arm. You know. Just on principle. *cough*)

6. If you were yourself in a fantasy novel, what role do you think you would play in the story?

I think I’d be some kind of scholar or librarian — the one who has some tidbit of information the heroes are looking for. I’m suddenly thinking of all the great fantasy libraries, and YES. This would be the best job. 😉

Or maybe I’d be a magical storyteller… who paints pictures of tales in the air…

I doubt I’d be a main character (I’m not even sure I’d want to be! They have such hard lives…) but I could definitely hope to be some interesting side character — hopefully one who survives to the end! 😉

7. One morning, as you are going about your daily business, you pick up an everyday item and a voice booms in your head with prophetic words about your future. What object is it, and what is your prophecy?

It’s my bullet journal, and it says that I must beware the owl that eats the moon at midnight, and that one day I will have a part to play in something rather vaguely described, with dire words about what I should or should not do, so that I will obviously not recognize it (due to said vagueness), or will misinterpret it, so it won’t do any good at all. Except for when everything is over, for me to look back and see it was right all along, and the prophecy smugly says, “I told you so.” Because that’s how fantasy prophecies often go. XD

8. You are transported into a magical realm and turned into a mythical beast… what beast/fantasy creature do you want to be?

I’d be a Faerie, the tall, elven kind. I think I’d be able to have wings sometimes and not other times (they’d be silver and blue and black).

9. If you could read your way into any fantasy realm, but the catch is that you can never leave, would you? Which realm would you choose?

Um. Wow. Fantasy worlds are so fabulous and also usually so dangerous! But I think I would — and I might pick Middle-earth (because obviously!). Maybe I’d go to the beautiful woods of Ithilien and visit Faramir and Eowyn after the end of the Third Age.

Or I might go to the world in Lady Moon and live in Tomas’s clock tower!!! #goals (Honestly, it’s my most recent Favorite Fantasy Home.)

Then again, I’d probably end up moving to Ingary, and staying in Howl’s moving castle. (And there I get to cheat the “and never leave” caveat, since the doors open to multiple places, so why shouldn’t one lead back home anyway…? ;))

10. As you are going about your normal day, you discover that you have a magical power. What is it?

I thought about this one a lot…

The ability to open portals and so be able to visit all my friends and top places throughout the world(s) would probably be my top pick. Because that would be amazing!

Then again, I might instead have the ability to get ALL the stories in my head written down Just Right, because YES. #moregoals

Tagging

#FantasyMonth is nearly over, but that doesn’t mean you can’t hop onto this fun “What if” fantasy tag wagon (don’t ask whether that sentence made sense) and do it any time!

I’m not sure who-all’s been tagged or not, but if you haven’t and it looks fun, consider yourself tagged! 🙂

(Though I retroactively tag Sarah @ Dreams and Dragons since I said I was going to and she already did it. XD)

Or answer one or more questions in the comments!

What do you think? Thanks for reading! And happy Fantasy Month! ^_^

#DescribeYourWIPinThreeWords Tag

#DescribeYourWIPinThreeWords

#DescribeYourWIPinThreeWords

Quite some time ago, the lovely Rebekah Hendrian (@booklass13) tagged me for a writing tag on Twitter, #DescribeYourWIPinThreeWords, which is exactly what it sounds like. I promptly did not do it, due to not knowing which WIP to try. So I thought I’d turn it into a tag on my blog and expand it.

I decided I’d take a dozen of my WIPs (don’t worry, I’ve only started half of them; the others are in plotting mode) and do all of them with three words each.

It’s really difficult, by the way, so I don’t know how well I did . . . But I tried and it’s all in fun anyway. 😉

Blogs + Infinity Dreams Award (Again)

blogoversary3

Good morning, roadlings!

Aaaand here we are, at the very last tag post of the month! On Friday I’ll be wrapping up this blog party with all the giveaway winners and links and such. I can’t believe it’s almost over!

(You can still enter all three giveaways for the nine separate prizes until midnight Central time Sept. 29, so if you missed out, hop on over there! ~ Writing Giveaway | Past/Present/Future Book Giveaway | Lord of the Rings Giveaway ~)

Anyhow, I have two tags actually today, so I shall proceed to go through those to finish the tag part of this month’s celebration!

Lovely authoress/blogger Shantelle Hannu @ A Writer’s Heart tagged me a few centuries ago (a.k.a. January) for the Infinity Dreams Award! Thanks, Shantelle! ^_^ (Everyone go check out her blog because it’s awesome and she is a thoroughly lovely person. ❤ She also currently has a blog series going every Monday called Hidden Gems: Authors You Need To Discover, and it has interviews and giveaways and is a lot of fun, so check it out! :))

I’ve done this tag before but am doing it again because fun questions, yay! (I’m really bad at coming up with 11 facts about myself, soo… as per usual, I’m just doing the questions… And, again, not tagging anyone specific, but feel free to consider yourself tagged if it looks fun!)

How many books do you hope to read this year?

Well… my “official” goal is 60 on Goodreads… which I managed to accomplish this month! *partying* But I’d like to read at least 75 if I can.

What’s your favorite song?

Never-Ending Road by Loreena McKennitt and Tell Your Heart to Beat Again by Danny Gokey.

What’s your least favorite holiday?

I don’t think I have a least-favorite… I know a lot of people who get depressed over Valentine’s Day so maybe that one; but then again there are the chocolate sales after…

Why do you blog?

I started because I wanted to start a sort of online presence for my writerly self, but I blog now because I can’t help it and I just love sharing things and talking with all you lovely commenters and… I don’t know! It’s just fun and I love it. 🙂

It’s silly, but I still get really excited seeing a blog post take shape… I think it out and write it and put it together with some pictures and links and things, and then I post it and… it’s so shiny and finished and it makes me happy. (Please tell me I’m not insane. >.> Oh, wait, too late. :P)

Favorite dessert?

Chocolate cake! Preferably a moist heavy one with frabjous frosting. Yum. I pretty much like most things that are a) chocolate, or b) mint-ish, or c) lemon if it’s the right kind and nice and sweet.

One movie coming out in 2016 2017 you want to watch?

Um. Since this year is almost over, I’m going to change it to 2017 and say BEAUTY AND THE BEAST! 😀

Some books set for 2016 releases you want to read?

Ones that haven’t come out yet that I’m excited about are Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo (sequel to Six of Crows), An Earthly King by Hazel B. West (sequel to Blood Ties), and The Silent Songbird by Melanie Dickerson (final Hagenheim book).

What historical era intrigues you most?

I like medieval times but usually in a fantasy-world setting… the 1700s is usually my favorite actual-history time-period (muskets and tricorn hats and coats!), though I’d be really interested to see the Celtic cultures back wayyy long ago since so much of the Celts’ history has been lost/destroyed and I’d like to know how it really was, not how people now hypothesize that it was.

Where would you love to visit?

The British Isles! Ireland and Scotland and all of it. ❤

What things inspire you to write/blog?

I don’t know! o.o Things just… come to me. And then I write them. Or blog about them. I guess my ever-active brain is always finding things to mull over… It can be exhausting at times! (Especially at 2 a.m. when I’m STILL trying to fall asleep and my brain is like “nope, too many interesting things to think about”. XD)

Some of your favorite blogs?

Since this is the last question of the Infinity Dreams part of this post, I’m going to take the opportunity to switch over to another tag here to answer this question. A tag… within a tag? Gotcha!

Mary @ Sunshine & Scribblings, and Jenelle Schmidt, both tagged me for the Blogging About Blogs Tag (here & here are their posts, if you’d like to see their own picks!), so I’m lumping that one in this post too, since we’re on the subject of blogs! Thanks very much to both of you!! ❤

Blogging About Blogs Tag

I always hate doing things like this, since I just KNOW I’ll accidentally leave some awesome people out of the list… But I thought I would do it anyway, to share the love for a few at least. So this is by no means a comprehensive list, and I love many more blogs that I don’t have time to list (please don’t feel bad if you’re not on here! If I comment at all on your blog, it means I love it too!) — these are just a few that fit the specific categories. 🙂

The Rules

  • Thank the person who tagged you
  • Answer the questions
  • Tag some blogging friends

THE QUESTIONS

Cait’s Paper Fury, and Of Words and Books by Ness Kingsley.

I can’t think of a new one so I’ll just mention a couple I enjoy that I haven’t mentioned yet: A Writer’s Heart by Shantelle and Ink Castles by Skye.

Blog I’ve followed the longest

Of the ones that are still going, probably Mirriam’s Wishful Thinking.
