Most Epic Heroine Silmaril Award Presentation #SilmAwards2017

The time has come at last, and you’re so excited to be attending the Most Epic Heroine Award Ceremony. You hurry to a door and knock quickly, hoping you’re not too late; the woods of Ithilien left you a little lost and you had to ask the way from a Gondorian guard.

The sun has just set, leaving the world in a twilight of stars, which is when the award presentation was supposed to take place. Hopefully you’re not going to miss it!

Light floods outside across you as the door is pulled open by a tall man with raven hair and keen grey eyes in a kind face.

“Am I on time?” you ask anxiously.

The man smiles. “We were only now about to begin. Enter, friend, and be welcome.”

He guides you into a courtyard edged with pillars of white stone, full of flowering trees and shrubs and many herbs, a breathtaking haven of a garden, lit with many bright lanterns as though the stars themselves were hung in the trees.

The courtyard is currently filled with a crowd of eager people staring at a dais at one end of the open, tree-filled place. You sigh in relief that you’re not late, and join the crowd, waiting expectantly.

The man who let you in mounts the steps to the well-lit dais and stands by a pedestal hung with a black cloth with a silver tree on it, which has an object sitting atop, covered by a gold-embroidered green cloth. A small mound of flowers lies over all.

“Welcome to our home in Ithilien,” the dark-haired man says, smiling. (You suddenly realize that it’s Faramir—the Steward of Gondor himself let you into his house!) “I will be brief, as this is not my day, but another’s. May I present the White Lady of Rohan, Princess of Ithilien, the shieldmaiden and healer Eowyn, who will be presenting today’s Most Epic Heroine award—and I, for one, believe her to be quite qualified to do so,” he adds with a quirking of the corner of his mouth.

The crowd laughs.

Faramir steps down from the dais to join the rest of the people, and smiles as he passes the lady mounting the steps, who goes to stand by a pedestal on the platform.

Eowyn turns. She is fair of face as she smiles down at the audience; her hair is like a river of gold, and she is clad in white, with a midnight-blue cloak with stars around the hem and neck. The audience applauds.

“Greetings, fair friends,” Eowyn begins, as the crowd falls silent in a hush of intent listening. “I bid you all welcome to the Award Presentation for the Most Epic Heroine Silmaril, which I am here to present. I do not know if I am qualified as such, although certain biased parties might say otherwise . . .”

The audience laughs again, applauding.

Eowyn laughs then too, merrily, like a tinkling waterfall. Then she continues. “But someone must, so I will gladly do this duty. I have here with me five heroines.” Eowyn gestures to one end of the dais-stage, where five figures stand among the pillars and trees to one side. “All of them are doubtless worthy heroines, but today, one of them will be announced as the most worthy of receiving this honor, as chosen by the will of the people here gathered.”

Eowyn turns toward the five heroines and beckons one forward. “In third place we have Cress of The Lunar Chronicles.”

Cress, a short, spunky young woman with an unruly mess of wavy blonde hair and a dash of freckles across her face, moves to the center of the platform. Eowyn takes a bouquet of white flowers from the pedestal and hands them to her. Cress accepts them, waves half shyly, half cheerily at the crowd (from which there are some cheers and a spattering of applause) and troops across the stage to the other side.

“Tying for second place,” Eowyn continues, “we have three heroines: Kyrin of The Ilyon Chronicles, Cinder of The Lunar Chronicles again, and Rose Red of The Tales of Goldstone Wood.”

At her name, Kyrin, a tall young woman with brown hair and grey-blue eyes, comes forward and takes her flowers. She smiles her thanks at Eowyn and at the applauding audience, her gaze sweeping each as if storing them away in her memory, and returns to her former place by the side pillars.

Next, Cinder, a thin, casually dressed young woman with straight brown hair pulled back in a messy ponytail, who may or may not be holding a wrench, crosses the stage, takes the flowers with awkward thanks, to the sound of clapping, and quickly crosses to the other side of the platform to stand by Cress. They put their heads together, chatting quietly.

There seems to be some difficulty with the fourth person, who has a slight frame all covered in somewhat dirty white veils so that not an inch of her can be seen. She seems reluctant to come out of the shadows, and appears to be having a hushed argument with the goat calmly chewing its cud next to her.

“I don’t want to be goin’ out there in front of so many people. I cain’t—” the girl in veils says.

There seems to be another voice—from the goat? But that couldn’t be . . . “Of course you can, child. Go on out just for a moment and have done with it.”

The veiled girl, Rose Red, crosses the stage and Eowyn hands her a bunch of red roses like her name. There is a lot of applause. Rosie mumbles her thanks to Eowyn and returns to her place by the pillars with Kyrin and the goat. The goat starts chewing on the roses.

“Don’t, Beana, you’ll be sick,” Rosie is heard to mutter.

“Bah,” scoffs the goat.

“And now,” Eowyn announces in a clear ringing tone, “last of all, in first place, we have the long-awaited winner of the Most Epic Heroine Silmaril. May I present:

Lucy Pevensie, Queen Lucy the Valiant, of the land of Narnia.”

The courtyard erupts into thunderous applause and cheering as a girl comes laughing out of the shadows and crosses on light feet to the center of the platform.

She is merry of face, a light of joy about her as she seems to be drinking in the beauty of the place, of the garden courtyard under the stars. From her shoulder is slung a bottle that looks like it is made of diamond, and at her side is a gleaming dagger. She moves to stand by Eowyn.

“Welcome, Queen Lucy,” Eowyn says. “I am told that you too are a healer and shieldmaiden as the circumstances require; that you are brave and kind, valiant and loving, and have the heart of a lion. May I present to you the title of Most Epic Heroine and this Silmaril.”

Eowyn sweeps aside the green and gold cloth and holds up the Silmaril for a moment for the gasping crowd to see, its beauty breathtaking, the lavender glow shining brilliantly across the fair faces and hair of both heroines on the dais.

Eowyn passes it to Lucy.

“Oh, thank you!” Lucy says. “It’s a great honor, I’m sure, though I don’t deserve it really; I’m sure there are others who should deserve it more, and I only did what I had to do . . .”

Eowyn smiles and says, “As a wise Lion once said: if you had felt yourself sufficient, it would have been proof that you were not.”

“I suppose that has to be true, when He said it; it’s just hard to apply it to oneself, you know . . .” Lucy says. “Well, thank you—all of you,” she adds, bowing a little to the audience. “I’ll try to be worthy of the title, and I’m very grateful I’m sure.” She smiles and waves. “I hope you’ll all try to be heroes and heroines too.”

The applause is deafening.

“Thank you all for coming,” Eowyn says when it dies away a little. “And now, friends, the hour has come—away! To the feast in the hall which is awaiting us during this time of celebration. Queen Lucy, if you will lead the way?”

The crowd cheers and streams under the stars after Eowyn and the laughing Lucy who goes first, shining the glow of her Silmaril to light the way.

Best Blogging Buddies Award

Tag Catch-Up Post #6

Right before last NaNo arrived with all its madness, I was tagged by the awesome Sarah of Light and Shadows for the Best Blogging Buddies Award! Thank you so much, Sarah!! ^_^ (Everyone. Go read her blog. Now. It is delightful and fantasy-esque and one of my favorites of ever! <3)

Due to the nature of the time I received the B-B-B Award, I didn’t get to doing it then… but that’s what this week of posting is for, right? 😉 (One left for tomorrow!)

And I’m afraid I’m going to be very lazy and pay no attention to the rules and only answer the questions… Because I am out of it and my brain literally cannot come up with fifteen questions right now, and I have a dilemma because what with all these tags all week I’m running out of people to tag! (And I have so many fabulous blogging buddies and don’t want to leave anyone out!! o.o)

However, I’m going to answer the questions because they are awesome ones (Thanks, Sarah!) and if anyone wants to steal this award or questions or whatever, steal away!

Also due to said out-of-it-ness, my brain is too tired to go look for pictures for this post so… you’ll have to use your imagination. 😉 (I know, I know, it’s cruel of me, especially on a Saturday, to put you to all that work…! Ahem.)

1. What’s your favorite pizza topping combination?

Cheese and hamburger. I have kind of boring taste…

2. If you could go back and change one thing in history, what would you change?

Meh. Everything? XD Probably something in Celtic history or perhaps the outcome of the Civil War.

3. What’s the last book that made you cry/scream/however you express book-related emotional anguish?

That’s kind of hard because there have been a few books lately I’ve been super annoyed at, but I wouldn’t say they were actual emotional anguish! o.o Maybe Orphan’s Song by Gillian Bronte Adams, which I LOVED; there was also a certain character who I got so attached to but not and… gaahh, it was very emotional-anguish-y! Of the best kind, of course! 😉 So yeah, probably that (unless unpublished books count, in which case… *points accusingly at Mirriam Neal* Creating book-related emotional anguish is basically her job description…).

4. Is there a popular (but more or less appropriate) song that you avoid like the plague? If so, what is it?

I can’t think of one in particular because I don’t listen to a lot of music that I don’t pick… In general though, if it’s rap or jazz, I’ll avoid it plague-ishly…

5. Do you want to learn another language? If so, which language(s)?

I would love to learn Gaelic/Irish/Welsh/Elvish… but I lack the fortitude and patience to do so. 😛 It would be awesome, though!

6. If you were given the opportunity to change places with a book character so you could try to do a better job than they did, would you? If so, which character?

No. I would definitely not have the nerve… There are plenty that I feel were idiots and that I know better then them, but… I just wouldn’t dare. 😛

7. Also, if you said yes in question 6, do you think you’d succeed? (Be honest!) How would your presence change the story?

I didn’t say yes, but even if I did, I don’t think I’d succeed. My presence in any story would probably only change it in a negative (i.e., this character is too terrified to do ANYTHING and is sitting in a closet reading!) way. XD

8. If you lived in a fantasy/sci-fi world, what job would you want?

Librarian, please! I’d live among the dusty shelves full of tomes and I’d help people find the ones they wanted and all of the awesome planning scenes would happen with me lurking (safely) in the background and in between I’d just read and read.

9. Cookies, kudos, awesomeness points, or something else?

Cookies! Always cookies. Or… Maybe cake. Because cake is good. *nod nod* *hands out cake to everyone*

10. Are you ready for fall?

Since I was tagged with this before NaNo, I’m guessing that’s why this question was here, but honestly YES. We haven’t actually had too much hot weather yet, but the summer is not my favorite time of year, temperature-wise. So even though summer’s kind of only barely here, YES I’m ready for fall! (Except that with fall comes NaNo and I’m SO not ready for that… O_O)

11. If you were going to dress up as a character from a book/movie/TV show/etc. (like for a costume party or convention), who would you dress up as?

Probably Eowyn. I’d wear a gorgeous but simple dress with flowing sleeves, and carry a sword around. It would be awesome.

12. Do you like romance in stories? Why or why not?

Yes, I do! Not as the main focus, usually, but I do like an occasional sweet romance. I think it adds a lot to the story and can be fun to watch the characters being clueless in love, heehee. …Okay, so I’m kind of a hopeless romantic at times. If I like the girl and love the guy involved, I just enjoy reading about them.

13. What are you really excited for right now?

Independence Day! I’m looking forward to spending the Fourth eating watermelon and ice cream sandwiches and watching fireworks.

14. What book/movie/TV villain would you most want to show up on your doorstep? (Or, to phrase it another way, which would you be least opposed to showing up on your doorstep?)

It depends if I had adequate protection. XD But as long as I knew they wouldn’t hurt me or anyone near me or burn my house down… Maybe Guy of Gisborne or Bucky or… someone like that.

15. If you were going to give yourself a personal title thing (e.g. the Taleweaver, the Pathfinder, etc.), what would it be?

Um… the… Penner of… Tales? I really have no idea. I’m not really good at naming myself. XD

16. What are you going to do now?

Go finish my tea and read, hopefully… There’s some books I’m supposed to review, and you can’t review something you haven’t finished, am I right?? So I will press onward with heroic valor, read the books, and prevail at the last! *fanfare of trumpets*

Happy Saturday, y’all!

Tookish Tag

Tag Catch-Up Post #3

So I’m super late on this one, but better late than never, yes? Waaay back in the prehistoric era when dinosaurs roamed the earth (i.e., January…) I was tagged TWICE for a Lord of the Rings/Hobbit “Tookish Tag”! By my dear friend Christine at Musings of an Elf and the lovely Aspen over on Heirs of Durin — both Middle-earth fans extraordinaire! I’m sooo honored and delighted to be nominated by y’all–thanks so much! And blogglings, check out their awesome blogs, do!!

Some may know that I’m an enormous Tolkien fan… 😉 So I’m excited to do this one!

Questions

1. How were you first introduced to LotR/TH and was it love at first sight/read?

I don’t exactly remember, it was so long ago! I know I read The Hobbit at a young age and adored it, and then I do remember later listening to all of The Lord of the Rings on audio when I was about ten. And what sort of question is that; of course it was love at first read! 😉

2. If you could meet the actors who portray the characters in the movies, would you?

Yes please. That would be so much fun!

3. What is your favorite credit song from LotR/TH?

I’m… going to have to go with The Last Goodbye, from The Battle of the Five Armies. It’s gorgeous and perfect. (Though I do happen to love Gollum’s Song from The Two Towers, as the semi-theme-song for one of my books. 😉 )

~ Night is now falling ~

~ So ends this day ~

~ The Road is now calling ~

~ And I must away ~

4. The Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit – which is your favorite?  *evil laugh*  (And no, you don’t actually have to decide.  I’m merciful like that. *magnanimous smile*)

I do love The Hobbit, but I’m going to say The Lord of the Rings. There’s so much more, you know? I just love the epic adventure and all the different side plots and complications and characters and just everything!

5. Who is your favorite all-around character?

faramir

Faramir! Positively, absolutely. He’s the most wonderful of all. …In the books, that is. To be fair, I do love him in the movies too, but he was not nearly as wonderful. Do not even get me STARTED on how they wrecked Faramir’s character in the movies, as I have been known to write lengthy rants on the subject… But just listen to this quote of his in The Two Towers about the One Ring:

“I would not take this thing, if it lay by the highway. Not were Minas Tirith falling in ruin and I alone could save her, so, using the weapon of the Dark Lord for her good and my glory. No, I do not wish for such triumphs, Frodo son of Drogo.”

Does that sound like the movie-Faramir, hmm? Book-Faramir is just so noble spirited and heroic, to the point of not even being tempted by the Ring. He understood everything so well, and even if his beloved Minas Tirith were falling, he would not chose to save it by evil means. Aaaand his list of virtues and noble deeds and wise words and general awesomeness go on, but… anyways, I will stop before this turns into a long winded rant. 😉 But I love Faramir the best and he is awesome!!!

(Plus, Tolkien said Faramir is the closest to being “like him” of any of the characters, and we all know how awesome Tolkien himself was. Just read his Letters if you’re in doubt.)

6. What is your opinion on Boromir?

I am quite honestly mixed. I’ll admit I haven’t reread The Lord of the Rings in a few years (which I seriously intend to rectify this year!) so… I am not entirely sure what my latest thoughts on him would really be. But I like him, at times, with reservations. He was a great man, but fallen — like all of us. But falling for the Ring, unlike his brother Faramir, and how he acted about all that put a serious damper on my opinion of him. But overall, he’s still a pretty noble guy, so… Yeah. It just depends.

7. How many times have you watched the movies/read the books?

Do not even ask! I haven’t the slightest clue. XD I’ve read the books and seen the films sooo many times. And I was definitely not counting!

8. What book is your favorite?

Well, technically the “trilogy” was supposed to be one book, sooo… 😉 But… okay, The Return of the King.

9. Who is your favorite female character (other than your answer to question #5)?

Eowyn. I love her vigor and heroism, and of course her and Faramir… 😉 I think we all want to be as amazing as this original shieldmaiden.

10. Who is your favorite male character (other than your answer to question #5)?

Other than Faramir, definitely Aragorn! I just love his nobility and goodness and skills and how all-around fabulous he is. From Ranger to King and all the way in between, he’s just the best!

11. Which of the movies, in your opinion, has the best ending?

Ummm. That’s hard because they’re all kind of cliffhangers or bittersweet. And how far does “ending” go? But probably either The Return of the King because… ending! Or, maybe, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, because Smaug’s eye. 😛 But… eh, we’ll go with The Return of the King.

And I Tag…

Sarah // Chloe // Jaye // Skye // any Tolkien fans reading this!

So what do you think?

Have you read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings? (If not… OH NO, WHAT IS THIS TRAGEDY? :O You must amend this at once!! Go, go! Read them, preciousss!)
