Wander With Me

Good morning, my Roadlings! Happy Valentine’s Day! πŸ™‚

I’m doing something different today — reviewing a music CD!

I’ve been curious to try Brittany Jean’s music for awhile, so when I heard about her new album and a chance to review it, I decided to go for it. I’m so glad I did!

Wander With Me is a collection of Americana songs. There are nine original songs by singer/songwriter Brittany Jean — she’s so talented! — and two cover songs (of John Denver’s Wild Flowers in a Mason Jar, and Bob Dylan’s Forever Young) which are quite well done.

It’s like summer and sunshine and the dust of a country road, and heartbreak and laughter and life, and love and smiles and wandering.

My favorite songs are Smoke and Mirrors (haunting), Wander With Me (charming), and one gorgeous part of Rise and Fall (inspiring). I’ve been going around with lines from those three running through my head for a couple of weeks now and it’s fantastic. πŸ˜€ I know I’ve found some new favorites to listen to again and again!

Dear Heart, Like No Tomorrow, and Forever Young, were also lovely. I enjoyed the others too, even if they’re not top favorites. There are always a few that just click best with me. πŸ™‚ But there’s something for everyone, I think!

The instrumentation/style is unlike what I usually listen to (being mostly a Celtic music person with a side of Christian pop/rock) but it was actually neat to try something new for a change.

Brittany’s voice fills all the songs with a sort of down-to-earth, light enchantment. There’s so much spirit and warmth to her singing! And you can just tell the whole thing — the music, the singing, the words, and even the pretty packaging of the CD — is infused with love and care. πŸ™‚

I’ve heard the album a few times and it’s been nice having something different to listen to. The songs feel much more summer-y and it’s a little like some sunshine during this cold time of year. It feels like you should listen to them driving down a dusty country road with the window open and a warm summer breeze in your hair… Or, well, doing dishes works too, and it’s a nice accompaniment to otherwise mundane life chores, I’ve found. πŸ˜‰ Everything’s more fun with a friend, and that’s how I felt listening to this CD.

Anyway, although not all of it was my usual cup of tea, it’s lovely music and I’m so glad I decided to try it out. πŸ™‚ If you’re curious, I do recommend giving it a listen, particularly the title track (Wander With Me) and Smoke and Mirrors. If you like what you hear, check out the rest of the album! Won’t you wander with us?

“We rise / We fall / We climb / We stall / We lose / We win and then begin again /
We overcome / We come undone / We give it all…”

— Brittany Jean, “Rise and Fall” from “Wander With Me”

      • @DJ: Completely Agree!

And, of course… you both already know I love this musician πŸ™‚ πŸ˜‰ (though I really do ardently adore Brittany’s music, and would love it even if she wasn’t my sister).

My favorites on the album are Really, Truly, Only (because: introvert – also, it makes me laugh), and I love You Don’t Know Me (because: subtle North and South reference, as well as how completely counter-cultural and heroic it is thematically), and Like No Tomorrow (which I can’t listen to without bursting into tears. Every. Single. Time. (I knew that would happen when I asked her to write the song… but still)). (I’m trying not to list ALL the songs, because… well, I do love them all, and choosing a favorite between things I love is impossible for me)

Rise and Fall is Nathalie’s favorite.

Wilderness for Heart and Smoke and Mirrors are Brant’s favorite.

I’m not sure which one is Leiana’s favorite. I think she’s like me… can’t choose.

        • Aww, thank you! *blushes* And I loved hearing about which your favorites are! Haha, yes, such an introvert song. πŸ˜‰ And I need to see North and South again, apparently… That one makes me cry too! And I love that those are your family’s favorites because they sound like them, somehow. πŸ™‚

  1. Wonderful review. I love how you’re willing to always try new things on your site. I never quite know what to expect when I stop by!

I have only heard a couple of songs off this so far, but “Smoke and Mirrors” is a favorite with me and my daughters. I actually bought this for one of them for Valentine’s Day (psst, don’t tell!) so I will get to listen to the whole thing very soon!

But your descriptions are lovely. I wish there were more artists like Brittany Jean. Just like the world needs more good books and publishers don’t seem to want to produce much of them, the world needs more good music and it’s so hard to find anything worthwhile on iTunes or even the radio!

Thanks for sharing this wonderful review. I hope it helps more people discover this wonderful and talented artist.

    • Thanks! And I guess I try to spice things up sometimes… XD

YES. Love Smoke and Mirrors. It’s so haunting and gorgeous! How awesome — I hope you and your family enjoy it when you get to hear the whole thing. πŸ™‚

Thank you! And I so agree — there definitely needs to be more good books and music out there.

You’re welcome! I hope so too. πŸ™‚ Thanks for reading!

  2. Oh wow, she has SUCH a breathtaking voice. It’s so easy and soft and beautiful. SO MUCH TALENT!

I never really listen to music like this either, but goodness, what a lovely voice. I absolute loved the lyrics to Wander With Me. It’s so adventurous. Makes me want to go roam the woods are go on a road trip or something!

You can just feel her passion for LIFE in her singing and videos. This was all so beautiful and made me happy! Thank you for sharing with us! ❀

Yeah, it’s a different genre for me, for sure, but it’s so lovely and a neat change! I love the Wander With Me lyrics too. πŸ˜€

YES. I so agree! They just make me happy! πŸ™‚ You’re welcome and thanks for reading — and listening! ^_^
