New Year, New Dreams

Oh, look, 2017 is over. Imagine that.

I now greet you from the amazing FUTURISTIC YEAR 2018. (Seriously though, who gave that number permission? I swear it’s still 2013…)

I’ll get to some quick writerly highlights of 2017 in a minute, but first…

Now is about the correct time to list goals and resolutions for the year.

But they’re funny things, goals.

They are things to mark off, and every moment spent NOT marking them off (other than moments spent actively working toward them, of course) can be seen as a failure… (Or is that just me? *cough*)

Which means that most of the time, goals can leave a person deciding to throw in the towel and move to the Alps to live with the goats instead.

(And don’t get me started on Resolutions, because those can be even worse. The second you break one: NOPE, DONE.)

Dreams, though… Dreams are different.

Dreams, you’re allowed to — well — dream them. And yes, you work toward them if/when you can, but they’re something more elusive; maybe they happen and maybe they don’t; maybe they’re out of your control but you can hope anyway; and maybe, just maybe, one day they’ll come true… especially if you work on them.

Dreams are less guilt-oriented and less of a rigid To Do List You Must Mark Off Or Else You Are Not A Decent Human And It’s Alps And Goats For You. (Don’t ask about the analogy, just… yeah, just roll with it.)

That’s why, here at the start of 2018, instead of resolutions or goals, I’m going to share some of my writerly dreams.

2018 Writer Dreams

  • Finish another novel. Not particularly picky as to which one, though The Siren and the Skyship would be my first choice at the moment.
  • Finish the short stories I started. (The Treasure of A Distant Storm, The Tangled Thicket of Perilous Perrifeld, Hairdo Havoc.)
  • Stop getting hung up on perfection and not-starting and just WRITE A LOT.
  • Which also means not getting distracted or letting other things get in the way of actually letting myself have some writing time. (This is harder than you might think.)
  • Start a newsletter. (Is this a terrible or awesome idea? Please advise!)
  • Start Instagramming. (I actually have one, I just… can’t post there yet because you need a smartphone to do so. *cough*)
  • Start a Facebook page. (Shocking, I know…)
  • Set up my official website. Which I’ve only been meaning to do forever. (Don’t worry, this blog and my book blog aren’t going anywhere! I’d just like a central hub, is all. Because #professional. And because — let’s be honest — MORE PRETTY WEBSITES!)
  • Get a crystal fox from The Last Jedi for a pet. (Wait, what? How did THAT show up on my writing dream list? O_O Ahem. Moving on…)
  • Spend more time with the stories and characters I love most. Like Tare and co., The Other Half of Everything, and The Siren and the Skyship. Speaking of which…

  • Develop the sequels to The Siren and the Skyship. (Yes, it’s a trilogy now. Yes, I know I haven’t finished the first one. Yes, there are more fairytales, though I’m not 100% as to which. Yes, I’m insane. Shush.)
  • Get my freelance proofreading/copyediting business off the ground. (This is the part where I get annoying and actually *gasp* market my services, and say: “Does anyone need a book edited? I love catching typos! I’m good at it, too!” But I’ll skip that part, because it’s boring. XD Oh, wait…)
  • Be more open about my writing dreams and thoughts on my blog. Wait, what? Isn’t that what this post is about? Well, yes. I’m not saying I’m not open and honest on this blog, because I am. But I’m somewhat of a shy, introspective person, and I was realizing I don’t actually share about things that really MATTER to me and are important to me, like my deeper struggles about publishing and writing and all of those goals and things. Would anyone care, I wonder? Is it only me? Sometimes I don’t share my writing goals because I’m afraid of failing; because, somehow, I expect to fail — and I need to stop that. So being more open with you, my lovely readers, might be a step in a better direction. Tare and I need to realize we need our Chess Club. (That’s you.) And as much as he and I like to work alone… “it’s more friendly with two.” 🙂
  • Figure out what on earth I plan to do about publishing, because I’m dreadfully confused and have been for years now. I think I’m pinning down some of what’s going on with my struggle, but it hasn’t shown the answer yet. I should probably post about this…
  • Speaking of: Write more awesome blog posts. And have a giveaway or two, because those are fun. And basically continue (hopefully) epicness and keep all involved happy. (Everyone: me, you, and the pixel-fairies who carry the words between us across the tangled web of internet. No idea where that came from. It must be getting late, y’all.)
  • Gather all the info I’ve accumulated over the years about publishing and marketing and make a sort of list of said tips. Because I feel like I know and have learned SO MANY THINGS, and would kind of like to see how much there is.
  • Get closer to publishing something, somehow.
  • (And… while I’m dreaming — hey, why not a really big one that I have no idea if it’s even feasible?) I would love to be able to go to Realm Makers this year. 😉 No idea if it could even happen, but it would be nice!

(My inner editor is squirming about that missing comma before “darling.” Unfortunately, my editing does not extend to gifs… Also, yes, I went from Tangled to Inception; problem? I have wide tastes. XD)

2017 Writing Highlights

  • Wrote a total of 86,000 words.
  • Wrote 5 short stories (Wintertale, A Tale of Two Boxes, a Kedran’s Wood “fanfiction” for myself and Lauri, Invisible Beauty, and Tare and the Puppies) — 3 of which I shared online! *shocking*
  • Started two other short stories (The Treasure of A Distant Storm, and The Tangled Thicket of Perilous Perrifeld. Wow, their titles are almost short stories in themselves…)
  • I hardly ever write short stories, so working on 7 this year has been very interesting.

  • Some work on Kedran’s Wood 2 (which is getting long and rambly and unwieldy; I should do something about that).
  • Also dibs and dabs of The Other Half of Everything, which is at around 15K words, despite not having a complete chapter written. XD (Writing things out of order and only when you’re 110% inspired is fascinating. If I ever get it done, it’s going to be the most awesome book ever, is all I’m saying.)

  • Started The Siren and the Skyship (and got maybe halfway).
  • So many plot ideas and lightbulb inspiration moments and restructuring of various books and series. There’s a lot going on in the fictional worlds inside my head, lately! I’M SO EXCITED.
  • Met with many amazing writer friends throughout the year. It’s been incredible! ❤
  • Participated in my 8th NaNoWriMo (as well as two Camp NaNo sessions, even though I didn’t plan on either. XD) and won.
  • Was an ML for my NaNo region for the 5th time, and ran a writing group sometimes.

  • Was in print for the first time! (Okay, not really… I was in a print copy of the collected Tales from a Modern Bard stories from that blog, which just the authors got copies of. But I did get to hold in my hands something with a story of mine printed in it! Thanks to Hazel!)
  • Got my first fan-art from the lovely Skye! (Thank you! ❤ )
  • Did lots of beta-reading and editing and such.
  • Built the Vintage Jane Austen website — such a joy to work with these talented authors! It’s been beautiful seeing this series release into the world this last year!
  • Was part of the second annual SilmAwards!
  • Announced my freelancing services.
  • Wrote more or less 50,000 words of book reviews this year. (Er… yeah… I write them in Scrivener and it tells me I’m pretty close to that, and I know I wrote some I didn’t put in there, so… yeah, more or less. Plus other blog posts, so who KNOWS how much of that there’s been. No wonder I don’t write as much fiction as I used to! O_O It’s been fun, though!)
  • Started a bullet journal. (Not super writerly, but it does keep me vaguely organized. I’m so excited to be starting a new one for the New Year today! The blue journal pictured in the header image of this post.)
  • Wrote in my writer’s journal every week this year. (Wow! o.o)
  • Posted 50 posts here on The Road of a Writer, and 66 posts on The Page Dreamer.
  • I’m positive I’m missing something EXTREMELY important, but this will have to do. XD

I’ll be sharing my top 15 favorite books I read in 2017, on my book blog soon, so watch out for that!

So, there you have my 2017 and a look forward to this new (futuristic *coughcough*) year of 2018!

And as I type this on New Year’s Eve, there’s snow on the ground outside, which is practically unheard of around here…

So you see, dreams do come true.

***

Happy New Year, my beloved Roadlings! May you have a most glorious and fantastic one indeed! ❤

How was your 2017 and what are some of your dreams for this year?

  1. I like your writer dreams idea. I still do goals, because sometimes I need that pressure to get anything done, but yeah.

Sounds like you have great dreams for the year. I hope you keep sharing them!

YAY SIREN AND SKYSHIP TRILOGY!!!!! I am unreasonably happy about this and want to time travel to the future so I can binge read ALL of it in one or two delightful days.

Also, regarding publishing: whatever you decide to do, if you need support, I got your back. And if you decide to publish, whether that’s self-publishing or traditional publishing, and you need someone to help promote your books, just let me know. My blogs, and any other resources I have, are at your disposal and I am ready and eager for a reason to shout to the world that they all need to read your stuff.

Anyway. Happy new year, and may all your dreams come true!

    • Thanks, Sarah! Yeah, pressure and I don’t do well together… *shifty eyes* But I love that they work for you! No wonder you’re so good at getting things done! ^_^

      Thank you, I think I will! 🙂

I’m unreasonably happy that this makes you unreasonably happy. 😀 (And actually, one of the characters in my Library in the Stars sci-fi story LITERALLY did this. He went into the future to get future books by an author, and then — unbeknown to him — the author saw it and borrowed his copy and so it created a split in time and space and messed things up. XD I… still haven’t finished that book so I haven’t been able to actually MAKE there be a tear in the fabric of the universe yet. But that’s the theory. XD That said, I appreciate the thought!!! XD)

Thank you SO much! *hugs* That means so much! Honestly, it will probably be a VERY long time before I can get all of that figured out, but thanks so much for your support and encouragement! I will definitely ask when comes time! ^_^

Happy New Year to you and, the same to you! ❤

      • You’re welcome!

Seriously? Oh, that’s brilliant. XD I want to read this now. But I shall take your warning; if I time travel and acquire your books, I’ll avoid telling you about it so I don’t accidentally cause a paradox.

        You’re very welcome! Any time!

  2. INCEPTION!!! and you have some neat goals!
It’s annoying to need a smartphone to post on Instagram -_- Also, cool on the “official” website stuff. Anything official and nice aesthetically is good in my books. (well, not *anything.* Websites were what I was referring to) ❤
From what I've seen, anything more on the Siren and the Skyship is awesome 😛 I love every snippet I've had so far! It's also interesting because I've started a fairy tale trilogy as well…based on the Little Mermaid. You have some pretty awesome characters 😀

    • Yes! I love that movie! 😀 And thanks! ^_^
Heh, yes. SOMEDAY I will have smartphone capabilities. XD And thanks for your thoughts! I love nice websites too.
Eep, thank youuuu! That’s so cool you’re writing a Little Mermaid series too! Good luck on that! ^_^ THANKS! ❤

  3. I’d love to go to Realm Makers, too! But there’s the cost and the travel and the fact I DON’T EXTROVERT, so all of those factors make it quite difficult…

YOU’RE OFFERING PROOFREADING SERVICES?!?! This is something I am VERY interested in learning more about! I have a tight budget, but after the fiasco that was editing Volume 2, I could really do with building up my proofing crew (seeing as, at the moment, it consists of me). Plus I’d much rather work with someone I already know, rather than trust a stranger with my babies…

    Liked by 2 people

    • Yes, cost and travel and extroverting are difficulties. XD But I would still love to! 🙂

And yes, I am indeed! 😀 I am just starting out, so my pricing is very negotiable! 🙂 If you’d like to chat about it sometime, shoot me an email! You know where to find me. 😉 (Oh, yes, I totally know that feeling. o.o Must protect the book babies! ❤ )

  4. Hey! I tried to leave a comment, but it told me I wasn’t logged in, (and I was! or something!!! )
Anyway, here it is, because I’ve not patience for web shenanigans this morning!!

Great list of dreams!!! I am a “no pressure” writer, so I actually have to NOT set goals, or else I freak about them so much that the writing doesn’t happen because I’m soo stressed about the pressure! 🙂
So I have very “wide angle” goals of basic word counts, and I don’t care where it comes from. This keeping track of things and having a “bar set” actually helps me relax, because I can show myself “See?! You are accomplishing stuff, don’t stress!!!” and it helps.
(So, my goals are monthly 20k except for: Nov.= 50k for NaNo; and both NaNo camps at which I want 30k each. )
P.S. I fell short on Sept & Oct. 20ks this year, which was disappointing, but during NaNo I got on a writing rush that carried me past the 50k; and I was still on it in Dec. and so I wrote my 20k for that month, PLUS the missing words from the two failed months, so the 2017 wraps up as a NUMERICAL Success after all!! 🙂

And I’d love to go to Realm Makers this year too!! If you come, you can maybe go with me? 😉

    • Gaah, silly WordPress — sorry! Thanks for commenting all the same. XD

Thanks! I am SO in awe of your writing and how you manage to make your wordcount goals all the time!! *flails around* That would be too much pressure for me, and I just don’t write that fast, so I think you’re amazing! Congrats on hitting your goals last year! ^_^ I’m so glad those work for you! 🙂

Eep, that would be cool if we could both go! 😀 Will definitely have to see if we can work it out! ❤

    • Awesome dream! 😀 That was just an example. XD

Hurray for similar dreams! Getting to go to Realm Makers would be AMAZING. Dunno if it can happen, but wow. XD Maybe we could meet there! 😉

Happy New Year to you too!

  5. This whole post just makes my heart happy and excited and thrilled for all your dreams and accomplishments and SDLKFJLKSDJ:LKJF. I JUST LOVE ALL OF THIS!!!

I really like your thoughts on dreams! I like goals, but if I don’t make them they DO make me feel like a worthless human being and/or want to move to the Alps. xD And I don’t even TOUCH resolutions. Noooo thank you. I do love goals though. They’re really the only way I get things done, but I think I have to remember that it’s OKAY if I don’t make them all. That doesn’t make me less of a person. But ANYWAYS. I love how you have dreams instead of goals. This is all just beautiful! (Also the Tangled gifs are perfection!)

AND ALL YOUR DREAMS! That would be so epic if you started a newsletter. o.o And setup an official website! AND S&S IS NOW A TRILOGY??????? EEEEE!!!!!!! THAT IS THE BESSSST! I AM RIDICULOUSLY EXCITED ABOUT THIS. The more S&S in the world the better! 😀 I’m super thrilled for you with your proofreading/copyediting business too! And oh my goodness, making a list of all the info about publishing is a BRILLIANT idea. o.O I may have to steal this one! Smart Celti is smart! AND OF COURSE I WANT YOU PUBLISHED SO BAD AND JUST SLKDJFLKJSLD:KFJ YES!!!!!

Also….Realm Makers! So, um…that may be happening this year? There are no SOLID plans yet, buuuuut yeah. I may be going. O___O That would be the most amazing thing in the world EVER if we could go together. We may need to discuss this!

ALL YOUR DREAMS ARE JUST SO WONDERFUL AND EXCITING!

And oh my goodness, look at all you accomplished in 2017!!!! :O :O :O So many words and short stories and MLing and blogging (116 posts total between this blog and the other one???? *collapses at the thought*) and building a website and just ACK. YOU WERE SO PRODUCTIVE AND AMAZING!!! I AM JUST IN AWE!

I do so hope all your beautiful dreams come true for this new year, and 2018 is the best one yet! HAPPY NEW YEAR, MY DEAR CELTI!!! (And wait, YOU GUYS GOT SNOW??? AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH! SO AWESOME!)

    • Gaaah, thank you so much, dear!!

I think you ROCK at goals! Me, not so much. XD But sometimes they are helpful! (Haha, I thought you’d like the Tangled gifs. XD)

Thank you! Your excitement is making me giddy! 😀 Erm, yes, a trilogy. o.o More on that soon; it’s been a busy couple of weeks in my head. XD I’m excited about my newsletter/website/editing things; we’ll see how they go! I’m glad you like the publishing info idea — steal it if you wish! 😀 (Awww, thanks. ^_^ I totally reciprocate your feelings, wanting YOU to be published in return!!! :D)

THAT WOULD BE COOL. Yeah, obviously, no idea if either of us COULD, but if we did and both could, that would be amazing!! 😀 We shall definitely have to discuss Realm Makers sometime!

Thank you so much! You are just the sweetest thiiing! ^___^ I hope your dreams and goals for 2018 will go amazingly as well! *HUGGLES* HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU TOO, LAURI!!!! (And yes! 😀 It wasn’t much snow, but it was so cool. ^_^)

  6. a) YAS GO TO REALM MAKERS. It will probably definitely help you make some decisions about publishing. It certainly did for me. I had given up on the idea of any kind of traditional publishing until I met so many small publishing houses run my Realmies. Now I know when the time comes, I’ll pitch to them because they’re not strangers and they’re not terrifyingly huge publishing houses.

    b) ahem yes make a Facebook page so you can join The Pack FB group *coughchokehackcough* >.>

    c) I DIDN’T KNOW YOU STARTED A BULLET JOURNAL??? HOW DID I NOT KNOW THIS???

  7. Tangled gifs!! And your “dreams” concept is definitely much better than resolutions. I love all of yours. You definitely should start a newsletter! While “email list” is one of those terms people tend to over-hype in the indie publishing business, I will admit that having such a list is a very important part of your online presence. And you do enough blog posts, reviews, etc. on a regular basis that you’ve definitely got enough material for a newsletter to wrap things up each month.

Also, whatever The Tangled Thicket of Perilous Perrifeld is, I must have it at once. It sounds utterly perfect.

    • Hurray for Tangled gifs! XD And thanks, I’m glad you like the dreams idea! Thanks, too, for your thoughts on newsletters! I think I will definitely start one up… 🙂

Haha!! XD It’s a totally random fantasy short story I started awhile back. I need to finish it… Thank you! That made my day! 😀

  8. D’awwww! I love your writer “dreams” idea to bits! *hugs it tightly* Goals and to-dos and resolutions have always been hard for me, too. I don’t want to live in the Alps with goats… well… the Alps would be okay… and maybe some puppies. But I would miss everyone back here…

Your dreams are lovely. I hope they all come true… even the crystal fox one, because those things are AWESOME.

All your stories sound AMAZING and I can’t wait to read them, someday, in whatever form you choose to share them. You have a knack for coming up with extremely unique and intriguing titles. I think you should write a post about how to do that… :nods:

I love all your GIFs. My family quotes that Inception line ALL. THE. TIME!

Thank you for the lovely Christmas card!

    Happy writing!!!

    • Aww, thank you! I’m so glad you liked it! ^__^ Goals and such can just be so hard, yes! But sometimes necessary…

Thank you!! I mean, the crystal foxes were the only thing I 100% loved about that movie, almost, so I just WANT ONE BECAUSE EPIC. (The porgs were cute and some of the movie was fun too, I’m just sayin’: CRYSTAL FOX.)

That makes my day! I definitely hope to share ’em someday! ^_^ Oh, goodness, I never thought my titles were THAT interesting! O_O *wonders what I would say in a post about that*

Haha, gifs are fun. XD YAY FOR AN EPIC INCEPTION LINE TO QUOTE!

You’re so welcome! Thanks for YOUR lovely Christmas card! 😉

THANKS! Happy writing to you too!! ❤

  9. Girl, I am so down for every single one of these writing dreams! *cheers* I also love calling them dreams instead of hard-and-fast goals, because yeah…when stuff happens and we don’t achieve them, it feels pretty crumby. (That’s something I’m working on myself–being flexible and giving myself grace.)

So much yes to all the stories you want to work on! That reminds me, I still have one or two KW chapters in my inbox from waaaaay too long ago. 😛 I miss mah Chess Club!

Your 2017 achievements are wonderful! I know quite well how it feels to look at all the things one HASN’T done, but when you look back at everything you HAVE…you should be proud! And besides, letting the fields lie fallow (or somewhat) is good for refreshing yourself and letting the creative juices simmer. ^_^ So I hope your 2018 dreams take flight in a splendid way!

REALM MAKERS. OH MY WORD. If it does work out for you, I would looooove to meet you there! *squee* I mean, I’m still figuring it out for myself and hoping that a summer’s wages will nicely cover RM *and* next fall’s tuition. But still. It’s quite likely I’ll be able to go. And even just the possibility of you going too makes me so excited! 😀 Keep me posted!!!

    • Thank you SO much, Tracey, dear! ^_^ Heehee, yes, goals are hard. Do work on giving yourself grace! You do AMAZING, honest!

Your liking the Chess Club makes me happy. 😀

Yeah, looking back at things we HAVEN’T done can be tough. Thanks for the reminder that I did get things done! And yes, some breaks are definitely good. 🙂 Thanks! I hope so too!

Heh, I have no clue myself whether things would work out for me to get to RM, but if we COULD it would be amazing! ^_^ Will definitely keep you posted — and you do the same! 😀

And thanks for your enthusiasm about a newsletter/thoughts and dreams! ❤

I’m the same way! It sounds so amazing. It would be incredible if we could go! We’ll see! ^_^

  11. Kudos for having so many ambitious dreams. And thanks for sharing them with us. You know we will be cheering you on as you knock them down or even just make progress on them. I for one am especially interested in seeing what your “official” website will look like since the Jane Austen one turned out so well.

I hope you can finish your stories and then figure out publishing. If you do figure it out, let me know! I am still trying to cage that bandersnatch myself.

Congrats on all you were able to achieve in 2017 (quit a lot actually!) and may you have a wonderful 2018, full of ink, pages, and the smell of books old and new.

About newsletters, I started mine last year and it has been so much fun! I absolutely love it! It’s been a really good place for me to share. I would say go for it, but only if YOU are excited about it. 🙂

I’m a young adult writer of fantasy and love meeting other writers who are dreaming and writing and hoping one day to be published. I love your blog ! Also, wow, you did amazing in 2017!
Your story The Siren and the Skyship – ah the title alone makes me want to read it 🙂 !!! Sounds so good.

    I think a newsletter is a great idea 🙂

I have heard of Realm Makers before and would love to go as well. It sounds like the most amazing environment to meet other writers and squee together haha.

Have a wonderful day and I’ll be sure to keep an eye out on your blog:)
