My Year in Writing {2016}

2016writingpost

2017.

A new year.

2017 always sounded like one of those far-away numbers, you know? Just fancy it being here now!

Time, my roadlings. Time is mysterious.

This last year of 2016 was in many ways a tough year for me, but filled with good things too. 🙂

If you’d like to see my Top 12 Books I Read in 2016 and other miscellaneous info about my reading life this last year, you can check out my post on my book blog! You know, in case you’re curious. 😉

This post, however, is all about my year of writing! (I know, I know, you would never have guessed from the title…)

2016 Writing

I wrote 71,854 words in 2016. Which… is less than my usual 100K, but I will be thankful for it. 😉

Since 51K of that was NaNo, my non-NaNo writing amounted to 20,720 words… which is why I feel like it was a slow year. Most months I was writing 2K in a month, which… well, let’s just say I won’t get my enormous 100K+ monster books written in a hurry at this rate. But all the same, I’m very pleased with the writing I DID get done, and I think I needed a slower, casual year of writing anyway. We’ll just go with that.

WRITING THAT I DID…

lscover

I started The Library in the Stars and wrote 51,000 words of that — huzzah! (Now I just need to write the ending. *cough*)

OHEcover

I “officially” started The Other Half of Everything, wrote part of the first chapter, and proceeded to keep writing it out of order later on in the book in snippets. Oops? 6,000 words this year.

KW2coverP

Filled in holes in The Secret of Kedran’s Wood and did editing on a few chapters and officially finished the first draft of Part 1! *celebration* I also started the next chapter, wrote a bit of that… and proceeded to keep writing it out of order later on in the book in snippets. Oops? (Wait, did I just say that earlier? *cough* Apparently it’s a trend.)

I wrote 6,800 words of KW2 this year.

On that note, I’m convinced Tare ambushed me and made me write an extra thousand words post-NaNo solely to be able to show Teague that KW is still ahead of OHE in the word department this year. Nicely played, Tare.

And we will NOT talk about the fact that I’m over 63,000 words into it and only a third done the story. AHEM.

IMcover3

And I wrote over 3,000 words of The Invisible Mask, and hit 20K, which was very exciting! I consider the “opening” done, so I’m kind of thrilled about this.

MidnightFearIMG

Rewrote an old short story, Midnight Fear, which used to be just over 1,000 words, and now is just under that. Very pleased with the rewrite.

silmarillion-awards-facebook

I also wrote that Silmarillion Awards Strangest Character presentation post poem, featuring Tom Bombadil and Puddleglum, which was 800 words.

Other than that, I wrote another 1000-ish words on random things like my New Year’s poem, short story Hairdo Havoc, The Silver Forest, and other Kedran’s Wood series jots, including Book 4… even though I’m still on Book 2. Yeah, don’t ask. #TareAndChessClubProblems

PLOTTING THAT I DID…

I did various plotting on various books, including The Silver Forest and The Invisible Mask, but mostly for The Other Half of Everything and the Kedran’s Wood series (mostly KW2), and for The Library in the Stars.

The biggest news was The Library in the Stars exploding into being, out of a bunch of different previous ideas, and being plotted and started.

I also had some exciting “clicking” moments for Once Upon a November, The Siren and the Skyship, and my short story Hairdo Havoc.

And new ideas happened too, of course. My Fairy Godmother Muse has been quite busy.

I suppose I should be grateful I only have half a dozen new “official” ones, if I include The Library in the Stars? (Which did actually combine some ideas, so maybe I’m at about the same number? I don’t know, my Fairy Godmother Muse confuses me so much these days.)

  • Painting Rainbows (Underground Rainbow spinoff involving heists & the painter artist Kevin Johnson)
  • From That Shadowy Land (inspired by various ballads and featuring Faeries)
  • The Treasure of A Distant Storm (futuristic London short story)
  • Wintertale (I don’t even know. Thankfully, it’s a short story)
  • (And an untitled novel to be written sometime farrr in the future, involving fantasy tropes)

#FairyGodmotherMuseProblems #PlotBunnyProblems

OTHER RANDOM WRITING FACTS…

  • Best writing day: 7,589 words (Nov 27.)
  • Completed my 7th NaNo!
  • Was an ML on my own for the first time
  • Was interviewed!
  • Got Scrivener (a.k.a. the Preciousss <3)
  • Started a book review blog and managed to write 61 posts on that during the year!
  • Additionally*, I wrote 76 posts on this blog
  • Yes, that is 137 posts total this last year
  • Somebody save me from myself

*I typed that as “addictionally” the first time. Oh the irony.

And that’s about it! Overall, not a bad year (Fairy Godmother Muse and her antics notwithstanding). ^_^

I don’t know what this new year of 2017 will hold for me in the writing arena (and I’m avoiding making plans, since historically plans and I do not mix well together — they tend to laugh at me, attack, knock me out, steal my everything, and leave me looking very foolish) but I’m looking forward to finding out! 🙂

How was your year of writing in 2016? Do you have problems with a Fairy Godmother Muse of your own? Any exciting writerly pursuits in the last year? Tell me all!

P.S. I’m thinking of going on a blog/internet break for two or three weeks… so I may disappear for a bit and come back around the end of January, give or take. Just a heads-up. Have a great month, everyone! ❤

  1. “Addictionally!” That one made me laugh. I think you might have to coin that term.

As always, so impressed with your literary output. I count reading and blogging along with writing in that assessment.

Seeing all the stories you are juggling, I am equally impressed. I am a one track sort of writer myself (preferably). I like to work on one thing and then move on to something else. Of course editing keeps me jumping back and forth, but that’s my natural proclivity.

Here’s hoping you’ll finish off one of these this year and set it free from the cage of your mind into the wide wide woods!

    • Haha, glad you approve of my latest accidental word creation. XD

      And thank you!

Honestly, I admire one-track writers and wish I could focus on one at a time… since my juggling tends to make progress very slow on all the juggled tales. 😛 (And yes, editing can make things juggle, by its very nature…)

      Thanks so much, DJ! 🙂

  2. I LOVE THIS POST. Seeing all the epic Celti writerly things that happened last year is soooo fun!!!

YES to the number 2017! That’s kinda like what I was saying in our email! It’s so big and futuristic. Like, HOW are we already here???

GIRL. Nearly 72k words in a year is a good number!!! Not many people, writers included, get that many words in within a year. You did so great!

I still think it’s so hilarious how Tare had to get juuuust a few more words than Teague. xD Though, of course, Teague is probably in his own little world utterly oblivious to his own book’s wordcount. It’s just so funny! GAH. THOSE TWO. THOSE STORIES. <333

But Celti! ALL THESE STORIES!!!!!! MEEP. You have so many epic stories and look at all the things you accomplished with each of them in just a year! Over 50k of LS, officially starting OHE, more work on KW2, adding more to IM, and rewriting Midnight Fear which was soooo cool! (Just thinking about it makes me want to go read it again!) And then all the miscellaneous stuff and plotting and MLing by yourself like the awesome, brave person you are! And excuse me, missy, you wrote 137 posts in one year???????????/ *faints* I…I…I HAVE NO WORDS. You are seriously the blogging QUEEN.

YOU DID SO MUCH AWESOME THIS YEAR. You should be so proud of what you accomplished! (And I think you Fairy Godmother Muse did well this year as well. Or at least TRIED to do well. XD) YOU ARE AN AMAZING HUMAN BEAN.

I do so hope you have a magically wonderful break, my dear Celti! You have earned it for sure! ❤

    • AAAHH THANKS LAURI! ^_^

2017 is far too futuristic… which makes it creepier that I’m used to the number already. XD

Aww, thanks! I do wish I could have done more than 70K but still. 😛

Heehee, Tare and Teague are quite interesting rivals, considering neither of them admits the other exists. XD It’s hilarious.

Eeeep I don’t know what to SAY to all your niceness! Just… thank you!! ^_^ (I… I don’t know what to say about doing 137 posts in a year either. o.o Meep. It’s kind of terrifying, TBH. XD)

You’re an amazing human bean tooooo! And my Fairy Godmother Muse TRIES, poor thing. 😛

      Thanks muchly! ❤

  3. Congrats on 71K! Even if it’s not your usual amount, it’s still an excellent number.

I very much sympathize with the “I have enough words for a novel and I’m still only a third of the way done” with the story thing. That was me with both Monster in the Castle and Destinies and Decisions . . .

Methinks Tare is jealous of Teague. 😀 Silly Tare. Doesn’t he know we can love both him and Teague equally?

Lianna (my brainkeeper/muse) has been relatively quiet on the book ideas things; she’s mostly just reminding me of things I want to do in future Berstru Tales books . . . despite the fact that I still need to finish editing this one. *sigh* Could be worse.

    • Thanks, Sarah! 🙂

The problems we writers face, including the ever-expanding-word-count-approaching-trilogy-length problem…. 😛

Haha, your image of Tare being jealous of Teague is hilarious. XD I don’t think he quite is, but it is rather amusing to watch. YESSS we can love them both! ^_^

I’m glad Lianna has been mostly behaving (awesome name, BTW!)… and I have that problem ALL the time, being reminded of parts that are way later in future books. But you’re right, it could be worse. XD

  4. *envies all the writing you managed to do* XD
No, but really, that’s awesome that you managed to write that much! 🙂 And I hope you have a good break this rest of January. ❤
And yes, I frequently have troubles with my own Fairy Godmother muse…I sometimes wonder if she's secretly working with the plot bunnies… 😛

  5. You’re such a writing queen. I love the sound of all your projects – it looks like you’re working on some epic stuff! (I am personally in love with what I know of TOHOE.)

I myself wrote around 80,000 words this year in fiction projects, not counting school stuff + random notes and brainstorming. Almost 30k of those 80,000 went to a project with a hard lesson forcing me to stop it. 😛 (maybe I’ll talk to you about details later. But it wasn’t a waste! I’m glad I learned this lesson, and I think it’s a lesser-known trap that more might fall into than I know.)

I’m so excited for 2017 writing! I plan on finishing my current and yet untitled NaNo novel sometime in the next few months. Right now I’m feeling a bit discouraged with the writing style, the fact that it’s probably not even half done at 50,000+, and a huge plot hole that I made as a result of writing without my outline for a few days. 😛 But with encouragement and perseverence, I’m going to get this baby done! (haaa. “baby.” MONSTER.)

I’m so looking forward to see what you do with your blog and writings in 2017! And goodness, I hope this year doesn’t fly by as fast as 2016 did. O.o But at the rate it’s already been going for me… ha. Fat chance. 😛

I just love you and your blog, Deborah! Thanks for being one of those who’s encouraged me and reached out to me even in my relatively newbie novelist stage. 😀

    • Awww, thank you, Emily!! ❤ You are so nice and make my day! ^_^

:O 80K is amazing! And all that other stuff too! And lessons learned are never a waste, so. 🙂 *is now curious what said lesser-known trap is*

Your 2017 writing plans sound awesome! Best of luck on finishing your NaNo novel! I'm sorry you're discouraged with the style and the length (believe me, I run into that a LOT) but do keep working on it! *huggles* Getting to the end will be well worth the struggles! I know you can do it!! ❤

Thank you! And yes, we'll see if it goes by as quick as last year. 😛

Awww, you're the sweetest! I love you too! And you're so welcome — I'm SO glad I could be an encouragement to you! *huggles* I'll still be here for you if you ever need me! ^_^

*squishes your comment because it made me so happy*

Yep, working on several at once… *high five*
Yes, I did indeed mention a futuristic London. >:D Not that its London-ness is super important but still… I need to write this short story! I think it’s going to be fun. ^_^

  6. You had a very productive writing year! I’m super impressed! I have no idea how many words I wrote if you count blog posts… but blogging definitely interfered with novel-writing… of course, my own proclivity to procrastinate and need to have “the perfect setting and mood and motivation” to work on my stories also interfered. haha

I love your new word “addictionally” I think I shall borrow it and use it often. “Orphan, as in a person who has lost his parents… or often as in frequently?”

    Anyway.

The very nice thing you have going with your plethora of simultaneous projects is that when you do finish writing them… you will have this enormous backlog of books finished and ready to be released into the wilds.

    Happy 2017!

    • Thanks, Jenelle! And yes, who knows how much extra words we write in blog posts! o.o I have a similar problem with needing the right setting/mood/motivation to write, so you’re not alone. 😉

I’m glad you like addictionally, and please feel free to use it. XD (Is the orphan/often quote a reference to something…? I don’t recognize it…)

Eh, that’s true, IF I ever get them all finished! 😉 But thanks so much for the encouragement! Happy 2017 to you too!!! ^_^

  7. That’s amazing that you got so much writing done last year!! I think it’s also very awesome that you have so many projects going and can write short stories and things!🎉 I so suck at those haha. So I did end up writing 4 books which isn’t abnormal for me particularly, but I didn’t do nearly as much editing as I should’ve done. Whoops. (Why is editing so torturous!?) And this year I’m already struggling trying to figure out what to write next! I have at least TEN outline all written out and ready to go.🙈🙊

I hope you have been having a nice internet break!! *sends you cake to lure you back though* 😉

    • Thanks, Cait! Short stories are fun, you should try one sometime… then again, you can write a novel in like three days so why bother, yes? XD I hope you can decide what to write next!! Thanks, I did have a good internet break! *noms cake gratefully*
